Citizens Advice in North & West Kent

Debt & Money

The Challenge

Around 50% of debt clients present with a deficit budget where their monthly income is not enough to cover essential outgoings.

We saw a sharp rise in clients needing a 60- day Breathing Space to suspend or prevent enforcement action by creditors last year.

While gas & electricity, rent and council tax arrears remained the number one problem debt, we also saw a rise in people struggling with credit cards, water debts, and mortgage
arrears.

This is a clear sign that many people across our society are affected by the cost of living crisis, and are unable to afford their essential everyday bills.

How we Help

Our team of specialist debt advisers achieve incredible financial results for our clients, and also provide support to build a more stable future. They can help with anything from maximizing income and drawing up a household budget to negotiating payment plans with creditor or helping Clients access insolvency options like Debt Relief Orders.

1.  Expert Advice & Casework

We provide support with

  • Financial capability: ways to maximize income and reduce expenditure, drawing up a household budget, safe banking and establishing debts.
  • Debt options: advice on all available options and support to access debt solutions like insolvency or repayment arrangements.

  • Creditor communication: where needed, we provide a casework service  with advisers taking action on behalf of our most vulnerable clients.

2.  Financial outcomes

In our last financial year, the MaPS debt advice team managed to:

  • help Clients achieve debt write-offs or negotiate affordable repayment plans for debts worth £950,000
  • record financial outcomes (such as income gains through previously unclaimed benefits) of £1.2 million

3.  Campaigning for Change

We advocate for fairer systems through networking and our R&C work:

Together Stronger

Specialist Debt Advice funded by the Money and Pensions Service (MAPS)

A team of specialist Debt Advisers are on hand to support people who are struggling to manage their debts.

Last year we guided almost 1,000 local people through their options on how best to deal with their debts, support with communicating and dealing with creditors and drawing up a realistic budget.

The Kent Advice Hub funded by Kent County Council Helping Hands Fund

It is critical that our service is available to all so we have innovated a new approach to engaging with local people on money advice issues.  With an emphasis on promoting money advice tips and key advice messages, kiosks in public locations around Kent and easy access to advice via video calls and WhatsApp messaging, we hope to be able to reach out to people – encouraging them to seek help early and not to wait until they are struggling with debt.
