Citizens Advice has been supporting communities in North and West Kent for over 80 years.
In 2000, Citizens Advice North & West Kent was established as an independent charity, bringing together this long‑standing local experience to deliver free, confidential and impartial advice on debt, housing, immigration, family issues and benefits.
As demand for specialist legal advice in our communities has grown, access to justice has become increasingly limited. In response, we achieved accreditation as a Law Centre with the Law Centres Network in November 2025 and now operate as North & West Kent Citizens Advice and Kent Law Centre.
Our Citizens Advice services continue to support people across North & West Kent, while our Kent Law Centre services are available to residents across the whole of Kent.
By becoming a Law Centre, we have significantly strengthened our ability to deliver specialist legal advice and legal representation to people who would otherwise be unable to access justice to enforce their legal rights. This dual model positions us as a key social welfare law provider for Kent, delivering measurable outcomes for individuals, families and communities.
The demand for expert legal advice continues to rise, driven by increasing levels of housing insecurity, financial hardship, welfare reform and complex immigration issues.
At the same time, the availability of free legal advice has declined sharply. Kent has been widely described as a “legal aid desert”, with many residents unable to find specialist representation when they need it most.
Without timely legal advice, problems escalate, leading to homelessness, destitution, family breakdown and long‑term harm. Kent Law Centre exists to close this gap and ensure that vulnerable residents can enforce their legal rights and access justice.
By combining the trusted, holistic advice of Citizens Advice with specialist legal expertise through the Kent Law Centre, we are now Kent’s leading provider of free specialist social welfare law advice, supporting thousands of residents each year.
We help people navigate complex legal problems and provide legal representation at critical moments — when their home, income, safety or immigration status is at risk.
Our integrated model bringing together Citizens Advice and Kent Law Centre delivers:
This ensures clients receive seamless support from first contact through to resolution. Early intervention prevents crises from escalating and leads to better, more sustainable outcomes for vulnerable people across Kent.
At a time when access to justice is increasingly constrained, this integrated model has never been more important.
We are a proven, county-wide service that prevents homelessness, reduces financial hardship, protects vulnerable families, and ensures that people can understand & enforce their legal rights.
Kent Law Centre is a proven, county‑wide service that:
By working across advice, legal representation and partnership delivery, we achieve lasting outcomes for individuals and wider communities.
In preparation for our launch as a Law Centre, in 2025/26 we have already delivered Legal Aid support to hundreds of vulnerable people across Kent, including:
• 518 people supported with housing and homelessness issues
• 130 people supported with asylum and immigration cases
Kent Law Centre is the specialist legal arm of Citizens Advice in North & West Kent. It was created to meet the growing need for free, expert legal advice and representation across Kent, particularly in areas where legal aid provision is constrained or nonexistent.
We combine the trusted, holistic support of Citizens Advice with accredited specialist legal casework. This integrated model enables earlier intervention, prevents crises such as homelessness, and provides legal representation when people need it most.
We provide specialist support in housing, immigration, family law, debt and welfare benefits—areas where vulnerable people are most at risk and where access to justice is most limited. We hold legal aid contracts in immigration and housing and our ambition is to extend our legal aid offering to cover family and welfare benefits specialist services.
Our services prevent homelessness, reduce financial hardship, protect vulnerable families, and ensure people can enforce their legal rights resulting in measurable improvements in wellbeing, stability and community resilience.
While Citizens Advice services support residents in North & West Kent, Kent Law Centre services are available to people living anywhere in Kent.
Kent is widely recognised as a “legal aid desert”, meaning many residents cannot access specialist legal help. Kent Law Centre fills this gap by providing free, high-quality legal advice and representation.
We collaborate with councils, voluntary organisations, housing providers and community groups to ensure residents receive coordinated, effective support. Our services strengthen local systems and reduce pressure on statutory services.
We welcome partnerships, grant funding, commissioned services and corporate support. Organisations can contact us to discuss tailored funding opportunities aligned with their social impact priorities.
