I started looking for volunteer work when I retired as I had more time to give.
Whilst researching different organisations, Citizens Advice struck me as an organisation that was practical and professional and did important work in the community which appealed to me. By volunteering, I also wanted to learn new skills and keep up-to-date with technology.
I have now been working at Citizens Advice as a Volunteer Debt Adviser for just over ten years and I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience.
My job is to find out as much as I can about a client’s financial situation, complete a debt assessment, deal with any debt emergencies, and then give the client the different options they have to help manage their debts. No client is ever the same and I am learning all the time. I have kept up to date with technological changes and learned about communicating effectively with clients. It is satisfying when we can provide a debt solution that relieves clients of their stress and worry and gives them an opportunity for a fresh start.
Currently, most people are facing a cost-of-living crisis and Citizens Advice can provide them with a place to talk through their issues, be treated with respect, and be given practical help. It is a supportive and stimulating work environment and I enjoy working with colleagues who all have the common aim of supporting the community.
